“Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?Romans 6:16
If truths were rated on a scale of 1-10, this one would score a 0 for popularity. But on the scale of necessity, a believer can grasp no greater practical truth.
As 2021 begins to look more and more like a 2020 rerun, one fact about Americans resurges: we do not like to be told what to do. Whether its masks or remote schooling, dining-in or eating-out, we’ve made up our mind that we are right, and woe be to the voice that disagrees!
Yet, as I have observed once, and will observe again: the human will may be hard to break, but it can, with measured success, be worn down. Given enough time, things you’d swear that you would never do, places you’d never go, things you’d never say are done, gone, and said.
When you stick your neck in the world’s yoke, you go the world’s direction.
We must all believe that there is no Heaven to gain or Hell to shun, because I see the multitude of brethren in Christ striving to make the world a better place to live. They are gung ho about virtues, freedoms, morals, and philosophy as they relate to the good of mankind. They have a fine reputation, always humble. They’d be the first to admit they have shortcomings and room for improvement- but ask them if their co-workers and friends are hell-bound sinners who need saving, they’ll be the first to excuse them.
In the end, that Christian brother or sister is no better than an atheist or antifa. Not because he has the same METHODS, but because he has the same MASTER.
The devil will tolerate your conservative voting, modest apparel, and clean living. He can handle your church-going, tithe-giving, Bible-carrying life. None of that scares him at all. He is the master of multiplicity: the more the merrier! He loves the diversity a ‘Christian’ brings into his club of drug dealers, agnostics, college faculty, and weekend partiers.
He knows you’ll follow the world to get what you want, just like they do.
Here’s how I know: Take any issue that you’ve been presented with in the last year. What is your stand? Write it down. Now I just want to know one thing- your reason, or answer, was it based on eternity’s values, or your comfort? Did you look to the Scripture to guide your reasoning, or is finding it in the Bible an afterthought?
That tells me enough to know who you’re yielded to. Don’t waste your time complaining or commenting on some divisive topic to justify yourself- you’ve given up control by choosing to yield. Like cars on a racetrack, you may not be turning as tightly around the inside corner as others are, but you will turn, gradually, but eventually, on the outside of the track. You are on the same course, running the same direction, with the same crowd.
This is a polarizing truth in Romans 6:16. It states you must choose a direction. Yield to righteousness, or you by default yield to the death. Obey or sin. It’s north or south, positive or negative, and every man lives by one or the other. As Adrian Rogers used to preach: “You are free to choose, but you are not free not to choose. No man can serve two masters, but he must serve ONE.”
Are you tired of being controlled by the devil?
Yield to a different master. Give your time to the Word of God. Give your attention to Eternity. Give your devotion and affection to Jesus Christ.
