Your Job This Sunday

The church is Christ’s body. God in his wisdom has chosen to pour out his Spirit to the church. God imparts his power thru the church, choosing it alone as the channel for his strength. God communicates by the church, it knows his plans, his feelings, and his will, because the church is privy to his very real presence. How amazing is the order of God’s church!

Wanna be a part of it? Chances are, if you are reading this, that you already are IN.

If any man be IN Christ, he is a new creature, old things are passed away, behold, all things are become new.”

“He hath made us accepted IN the beloved. IN whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins,”

If you’re not IN, the conditions for getting in are real simple: ” For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth IN him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Your sins keep you out, so get sorry for who you are, ask Jesus Christ to take all your sin away, and trust him to care for you past, present, and future. That is all. He saved your life, you’re in.
Now what?

I’m counting down the minutes in anticipation of the gathering of believers this Sunday. Many, like me, have lessons to teach their classes, songs to sing, announcements to prepare, plans to make with their teams– Sunday is far from a day off! It is a day to throw your heart and soul into serving God with a great assembly.

Why then do many people feel disengaged from church? They act as if there is nothing going on, nothing to look forward to, nothing that requires their attention. What could be more active than a New Testament, soul-winning, Bible-believing, growing church?

I used to think church was boring too, until I discovered my calling. While I was sitting on the second pew from the front, the Holy Spirit revealed that no longer was I saved to sit, but I am saved to serve! God had a job for me to do, and when I applied, he accepted, and there has been nothing but action since. I couldn’t begin to tell you what your vocation in God’s church might be, but I can advertise some current occupations you may engage in this Sunday:

  1. Encourage others to praise and worship the Saviour. Some elderly person might need help finding the song in the songbook, or holding it up while they sing. Encourage! Some shy individual may not feel comfortable lifting their voice to sing- until they hear you glorifying God with your whole heart. “Praise is comely” …so come to praise!
  2. Offer a helping hand to another worker. There are prayer requests that many have wrote down to give to the Pastor, but many of them never make it! Help! You can grab a handful of pens and prayer request slips and assist someone in making their requests known to other praying saints. Young man, do you not yet have a job to give a tithe in the offering? Offer yourself to help take the collection- God wants YOU before a measely pile of money anyway! The Macedonian church, “Did, not as we hoped, but first gave their own selves to the Lord, and unto us” You have alot to offer- and there is much to do.
  3. Take notes on the message. Oh, how important this is! You need this message today, and you will need it all this week. Write it down! Don’t forget so quickly what God blesses you with. And there is a much bigger responsibility at stake here: you have a message to deliver to someone lost, or hurting this week. Many a Christian will have nothing to say when they are needed to SPEAK UP the most. The preacher is handing you a lesson from the heart of God- take it, and tell it over and over again. Even Paul the apostle, “delivered unto you first of all that which I also received.” You have a great commission to fulfil this week; the Gospel can be carried to the uttermost part of the earth, by you.
  4. Pray with somebody today. I am blessed constantly by those who pray for me. I am blessed so much more, by those who pray for me, with me. You will see needs today that you cannot meet, hearts broken that you cannot mend, choices to be decided that you cannot make– so, my brother, my sister, would you pray with them? Lady, walk with that single mother to the altar, wrap your arm around her, and talk to God on her behalf. Brothers, that young man sitting beside you would go down at the invitation, if you would. Won’t you go, if nothing else but to weep with him? You may pray FOR someone, (Amen to that) but how much better to “pray with the Spirit, and… pray with the understanding also.”  This is a calling for you.
The church needs you this morning. God has gainful employment for you, if you want it. Show up today with a smile on your face, ask “What wilt thou have me to do?” And get ready to be blessed by the Master of the house- for he has a job just for you.
