While writing a message this past week, I was astonished to find that there are some things God did not honor with a mention in the Bible. Now, I understand the importance of every word God speaks, and I feel that there is also something to be learned from what he refrains from speaking.
You will be hard-pressed to find a ‘bridge’ in the canon of Scripture. It seems strange enough that you won’t find a ‘smile’ though there are numerous mentions of joy. Our beloved ‘America’ is omitted, lumped together with the nations. ‘Politics’ are missing as well.
Certain sins are not listed by their popular names (‘popular’ is absent also). ‘Homosexual,’ ‘pedophile,’ and, ‘gossip’ are not graced with such benign terms. You also won’t be confused by a ‘Catholic’, and ‘Muhammed’ is no prophet of Jehovah. ‘Creeds,’ ‘culture,’ and, ‘catechisms’ don’t compete for space in the Book either.
Job 28:18 says, “No mention shall be made of coral, or of pearls: for the price of wisdom is above rubies.” In other words, “Don’t mention that stuff; it doesn’t compare to the value of wisdom. I did a quick investigation on rubies, and found that they are 500 times more valuable than gold, at more than $2,000 per carat (1 ounce = approximately 500 carat).
So what the Lord says is that he omits the garbage for gems. “Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard.” There is something else more precious than rubies.
Proverbs 31:10, “Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.” God, not the government or modern science, GOD values the woman of character at FAR ABOVE the ruby. In light of that, I want to praise my wife a little bit. I couldn’t find the word ‘superhero’… but I don’t need to; I have her.
There are so many selfless deeds done in our household, and the wealth of them come from my wife. If there is ever a crunch for time- she will let me go on ahead, taking care of the children and grabbing anything I left behind in my haste. She always takes the less-desirable chores. She is an expert teacher, guiding the young minds in the way they should go, at the expense of looking dignified to the ‘liberated woman.’
I know many an ignoramus to whom wisdom was a stranger, but he happened upon a good wife. The Bible says that God takes care of fools and drunkards, and many of these I believe he blessed with a wise help-meet. A wife who prays for the decisions her husband makes is much better than wisdom. That’s who my wife is.
We are more likely to hide and conceal things of value. It’s the norm, but it is also a shame. Godly motherhood ought to be displayed at the forefront of every Christian home- for THAT is it’s crown jewel- she certainly is at my house.
Make no mistake, Solomon personifies wisdom as a Godly lady, Paul gives to charity a feminine character, and above them both God places the loving, serving, saintly wife. Many topics did not merit a mention in the Holy Book, but this one, the best of all subjects, is not only mentioned, but glorified.
I’d like to answer the age old Proverb this morning: “Who can find a virtuous woman?”
I did. And I love her with all my heart.
